Asparagus is a popular vegetable but did you know there are asparagus festivals too? Here are some asparagus festivals around the country that you can attend and celebrate this great vegetable.
Stockton Asparagus Festival
Downtown Stockton, CA
This festival features a lot of entertainment value and has been around for 28 years. You’ll find live music on the main stage from top acts in the music industry as well as old time favorites. There’s also a wide range of local talent, magic shows, dance and other types of music for your enjoyment at the Stockton Asparagus festival. You’ll find circus acts and other entertainment options as well as special events.
You can see food demonstrations at this festival and take part in an eating competition. This festival has a lot of opportunities for children to enjoy themselves such as viewing sea lions or seeing the circus. There are a number of races, golf, a farmers market, and fun for the whole family at the Stockton Asparagus Festival.
British Asparagus Festival
Ashdown Farm Badsey, Nr Evesham
The vale of Evesham asparagus has grown in popularity over thе years and has seen good success at auctions. This led to talks between growers and other sin the industry about combining the auctions with other events for a festival. Its first year was 2006 and it gained a lot of interest. The area has benefited form the festival and in the years since the first festival the events have been a success. It has been featured on television and in newspapers and puts money into the local economy.
During festival you will learn about this vegetable and get to taste, as well as cook it. There’s a festival run as well as a cookery demonstration during the festival. There are tours as well as the asparagus auction. The festival takes place over several months so there are various activities during this time.
Key events include the Great English Asparagus Run, Asparagus Night Cookery Demonstration, Asparabus Coach Tours, Asparagus Evening at The Lygon Arms, Bretforton Silver Band, Asparagus Auction, and Asparagus Festival Family Fun Day.
This small town in Germany calls itself “the capital of the asparagus” and holds a festival dedicated to this “royal vegetable” called Spargelfest. In fact many German cities celebrate the beginning of the asparagus harvesting season. This festival celebrates the harvest of white asparagus.
Events, held the first weekend in May, include parades, a banquet in the garden of the castle of Elector Carl Theodor, concerts and theatrical performances. The hilight is the crowning of the Asparagus Queen.
There is even a bronze statue in the market square of a young girl helping her mother stack harvested asparagus.
National Asparagus Festival
This festival includes a parade, activities for the family, crafts, arts, a run, and a food show and other entertainment for the family. This event even features an asparagus queen beauty contest. The crafts area at this festival features home made goods, jewelry, stained glass, painting, crochet, and other items for your enjoyment. There are also a lot of activities for children such as a waterslide. Adults can tour an asparagus farm and find out more about this vegetable as you talk with growers in the industry. There’s also a wide variety of asparagus dishes that you can try.
WGBY57 Asparagus Festival & Gala
At the festival you’ll enjoy all day music food, crafts, and various vendors. There’s entertainment by Tom McCabe of Paint Box Theatre, baby bison, and the kids will love Curious George the monkey. There are a lot of asparagus themed activities for the entire family. For the adults, they can enjoy local craft beer tasting. Other activities include an asparagus luncheon prepared by the local restaurants. Various speakers will teach you about asparagus and sustainability. At the asparagus gala there’s a cocktail reception for VIP guests and a dinner with a sample of wine with each course. Throughout the evening of the gala you can enjoy live music. For those that want to try something different there’s even asparagus ice cream.
Annual Empire Asparagus Festival
This festival features a street dance and pig roast as well as live entertainment. There’s also a parade and a run to participate in. Barbeque chicken is served in the afternoon from pm till 8pm so you won’t go hungry. At the big tent you can enjoy wine and beer tasting as well as asparagus dishes. There are crafts, arts, and other things to do at this festival. Those that like to cook cаn enjoy the asparagus recipe content and a cook-off.
Penventon Asparagus Festival
This festival is the brain child of hotel head chef Joe Lado Devesa. It’s a one day event to celebrate this vegetable. The Cornish varieties are considered some of the best in the world. At the festival you’ll enjoy asparagus recipes, cookery demonstrations, asparagus tasting and you can meet some of the growers in the Cornwall area. You will learn tips and hint son how to grow and enjoy asparagus at home. The festival also features a wide variety of local fresh Cornish produce at the food market. You can buy asparagus, sea salt, vegetables s, poultry, and many wonderful items at the market. This is an asparagus festival for the adults.
York Asparagus Festival
York, United Kingdom
This festival is an off-shoot of the popular York Food festival and it celebrates the locally grown asparagus vegetable. At this festival you can go to the demonstration area and see performances from the local food experts. At the festival cafe you’ll enjoy locally grown asparagus with various dishes. There’s a festival champagne bar where you can get yourself a glass of champagne or get a glass of ale at the Real Ale Bar. The festival market features local meats, smokehouse delicacies, regional cheeses, asparagus, beer cakes, street food and hot pickles.
Regina & Saskatoon, Canada
The German Harmonie Society in Regina has put on its own version of the German even for years. The Canadian version features cocktails, live entertainment, and a 4-course meal prepared by the club’s chef. In 2013, the German Cultutal Centre in Saskatoon held its own celebration of asparagus.
